Linnaeus is a world-class, state-of-the-art laboratory, with a team of highly trained professionals providing clients with a broad range of diagnostic testing and R&D activities in the areas of plant and soil health, and water, air and food quality.

Based in Gisborne, Linnaeus was established in 1999 to conduct Riversun’s grapevine virus testing and in-house R&D work. It achieved IANZ accreditation for its ELISA testing work in 2000 and over the last 15 years has added PCR testing (molecular-based viral and fungal diagnostics) and classical microbiology diagnostics (culturing). It also conducts large-scale industry-funded vine health research projects, which requires collaborating closely with leading research teams both in New Zealand and overseas.

For six months each year, a team of lab assistants work in the ELISA testing programme. During the busy season Linnaeus processes more than 5,000 leaf or cane samples a week as part of Riversun’s independently audited grapevine certification programme.

Drawn from around the world, the Linnaeus team have grown from three to thirteen very talented staff providing the local farming, horticulture, forestry and fishing industries with access to a comprehensive range of environmental testing. For example, Linnaeus currently provides a marine sampling and testing service for the local port as well as a range of testing for local orchardists - Kiwifruit GAP clearance for irrigation; Navel Orange BrimA clearance testing and Avocado maturity dry matter testing.
